Workers' Compensation

By law, all employers must carry workers' compensation to protect employees in the event of a work-related injury or illness. If you are a sole proprietor you may cover yourself with workers' compensation. If you are incorporated, you will be covered as an employee of the corporation unless you specifically opt out.

There are two kinds of benefits provided under workers' compensation.

  • Wage replacement covers some or all or some of your injured employee's pre-injury wage
  • Medical coverage - provides medical and vocational rehabilitation to an employee for an on-the-job injury

The cost of coverage will vary based on the nature of the work that your company engages in and the amount of your payroll. It is also based on your actual history of past losses, so your own loss reduction efforts can help to minimize your costs. There are many loss reduction steps employers can take to minimize losses and the cost of workers' compensation. If this is a costly business item for you, please talk this over with us.
