Auto Insurance

For Massachusetts auto insurance, see our frequently asked questions.

Auto insurance covers you for financial loss if you have an accident. It includes property, liability and medical coverage. Some form of coverage is mandatory in most states. In addition, if you are financing a car, your lender may require coverage. The price of your coverage will vary by state, by the type of vehicle you have, and by coverage options you choose.

Auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage, with each being priced separately:

  • Bodily Injury Liability - covers injuries that you and any listed family members might cause to someone else.
  • Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection - covers treatment of injuries for the driver and passengers of the policyholder's car. Coverage can vary, but may include medical payments, lost wages, or funeral costs.
  • Property Damage Liability - covers damage you or an authorized driver of your car causes to someone else's property.
  • Collision - covers damage to your car resulting from a collision with another car, or damage caused by some other accident that occurs, such as damage if you strike an object, hit a pothole, etc. Collision insurance generally has a deductible, which can vary. Essentially, a deductible is the amount you are willing to pay out of pocket for any losses before your coverage kicks in.
  • Comprehensive - covers loss due to theft or damage caused by vandalism, weather, fire, or other types of damages and events unrelated to a collision. Comprehensive insurance generally has a deductible, which can vary. Essentially, a deductible is the amount you are willing to pay out of pocket for any losses before your coverage kicks in.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage covers you or a listed family member if you have an accident with a driver that doesn't have insurance or has insufficient insurance. It also covers damage from a hit-and-run accident.

There are optional benefits that can be purchased, such as for towing and car rental reimbursement. Your policy will not pay for damages due to normal wear and tear such as mechanical or electrical breakdowns and flat tires.
